The story was based on the life of Jack Johnson. The production opened in December 1967 at the Arena Stage, the leading nonprofit theater in New York, which was founded by Zelda Fichandler. The show, directed by Edwin Sherin and starring James Earl Jones and Jane Alexander, was financed partly by the fledgling National Endowment for the Arts. Included with the script is a letter from Zelda Fichandler's secretary to Ms. Lindy Knapp, 1968, and a clipping about the play by Bruce Weber, ca. 1971.
